China's research and development of high-precision sensors to enhance the safety monitoring of high-speed rail

Recently, at the “High-end Forum for Cutting-Edge Technology Development for Advanced Rail Transit Equipment” held in Wuxi, Feng Jianghua, chief engineer of CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute Co., Ltd., believes that the challenges of China’s high-speed rail safety are not only present but even increasing. It is necessary to strengthen the research on the high-speed railway safety and security technology system as soon as possible.

As of 2016, China's high-speed rail operating mileage exceeds 22,000 kilometers, and the annual passenger traffic is close to 1.5 billion passengers. It is the high-speed railway network with the longest operating mileage, the largest total traffic volume, the fastest operating speed, and the most complex technology. At present, China operates more than 4,500 high-speed trains every day and transports 4 million passengers, ranking first in the world. With such a large scale of operations, extremely stringent requirements are placed on security assurance technologies.

Feng Jianghua responded by saying that life prediction is a key component of high-speed rail health management. At present, the CSR Zhuzhou Institute has begun to engage in life-long research on traction power and core component life.

Experts at the meeting said that in the process of going out of the high-speed railway, it is necessary not only to challenge some of the world's extreme weather conditions and complex geological conditions, but also to meet the requirements of technical standards and the requirements for interconnection and interoperability in security operations. In this process, how to identify the relevant security factors is a top priority.

Feng Jianghua said that because of the risks brought about by the complexity of the high-speed rail system, it is ubiquitous and affects each other. We must focus on risk control in terms of safety and security technologies and strengthen the management of risks.

From the technical level, he proposed to study the safety perception and early warning technologies of high-speed trains, infrastructure, safety awareness and early warning technologies, natural environment safety awareness and early warning technologies, and form dynamic emergency control and other platforms to form a high-speed railway safety guarantee system.

Feng Jianghua introduced that CRRC launched the R&D of rail transit safety assurance technology in 2016. The aim is to install more high-precision sensors through research and development to improve the monitoring capabilities of vehicles, natural environments, and track lines in order to build high-speed rail “Golden Bells”. After successful technical breakthroughs, the completion rate of safety warnings for rail transit operations such as high-speed rail trains will be increased by 30%, and rail transit operational safety accidents caused by technical reasons will be reduced by 50%.
